Outside, on the courthouse steps, he asked, “What does earning look like?”

He almost smiled. “I can do boring,” he said.
“Try,” I said, and meant it.

I trimmed the mint and set a mason jar of cuttings by the sink, a domestic version of a victory parade that no one but me needed to attend. We role-played phone calls to banks. “You are allowed to ask for a supervisor,” I said. “You are allowed to say, ‘No, thank you,’ and hang up.” We practiced saying no as if it were a language we were learning late and fluently.
After the third session, a woman with silver hair pulled into a braid said, “I wish my mother had had this,” and I touched the locket at my throat and thought, Me too. I took the class roster home and pinned a copy to the corkboard. Underneath, I wrote: Teach what you needed.
One evening, the doorbell rang at a time of day when doorbells mean either trouble or a package you forgot you ordered. It was neither. It was Matthew, standing two steps back the way the memorandum required, a paper bag in his hands like a peace treaty.
“I didn’t call ahead,” he said. “So I’ll stay on the stoop. I made you soup.”

At the bottom of the page, I wrote, for no one but me: You are allowed to receive without becoming indebted.
Emily filed nothing. She sent no one. I heard, through a friend of a friend who doesn’t gossip so much as deliver weather reports, that she had taken a job she didn’t love. I believed it. It is hard to love a job when it does not include the part where you control the temperature in every room. That is her weather now. I do not have to stand in it.
On the anniversary of Richard’s death, I walked to the park and sat on the bench under the oak tree that has been shading us for two decades. On a Tuesday in late fall, my phone buzzed at 3:58 p.m. “Hi, Mom,” Matthew said when I answered at four. “I fixed the wobble in the desk.”
“Good,” I said, and pictured a man who had finally learned to sit at a table that didn’t lean.
