The aisle was empty beside me.

For a second, it felt louder than the music. Louder than the rustle of chiffon and whispering guests and the soft scrape of church shoes on polished wood. The string quartet in the corner kept playing Sinatra, the same song my groom’s mom insisted on, while a tiny American flag magnet rattled on the old metal exit door every time it closed and opened behind latecomers.
